The do’s and don’ts of mixing styles
Often our clients have different styles. One loves a traditional look and her significant other likes clean and modern. One loves industrial and the other enjoys vintage and antique styles. While it can be a challenge we love to take advantage of the situation to create a one of a kind space. This will not only please both sides but will leave the couple with a unique space they are both going to LOVE.
Here are a few simple tips we like to stand by:
Balance – it’s all about balance after all isn’t it? Now a little easier said than done but you must give to get! You know that Victorian velvet sofa you’ve been wanting at Anthropologie forever, but your husband hates? Yes, it’s time to give – give it up.
Settling on a more neutral sofa will not only be easier to mix both styles, it will allow you to balance the neutral with a little color elsewhere.
*When mixing styles stick with large neutrals you can balance out the neutrals with a funky colored chair, throw pillows or eye-grabbing artwork
Simplify– do not overkill on one specific style. It’s best to grab a combination of your favorite pieces than accessories only from Pottery Barn. Your favorites will then stick out to really help make the space unique.
If you are trying to mix styles try grouping comparable items together whether it’s of color, size, or height. Sticking with a consistent color scheme will make everything simpler and more pleasing.
*Traveling is a great time to grab unique decor. Here we helped a couple mix wooden masks from South America with vintage books, modern planters, and neutral vases to style open shelves. Not only do you have beautiful shelves but stories to tell of where the items came from.
Repetition– continue mixing styles in not just one room but throughout the whole house. Blending the styles together in all spaces will help eliminate pieces from sticking out too much. Repetition is used a lot within fabrics and artwork. You can stick to a similar palette but get pillows, fabric, and rugs in a variety of styles!
*Repeating colors used in surrounding rooms is a great way to blend your home. Stick to your palette but then throw in a funky pillow, unique chair or light fixture.

I agree completely with your advice on not going full throttle on one “look” (my words). Its is sad to see a beautifully designed room with its core pieces and then all the accessories from a catalog that we all see in our mailbox 3 times per month! The house has no soul.
